TIME ODYSSEY: A TRIBUTE TO STANLEY KUBRICK BY ORODEUS

1 March 2017, Singapore – ORODEUS, a new watch brand conceptualised and designed out of Singapore, is set to make ripples in an already-crowded space with its science fiction/manga/comic-inspired designs. The idea behind ORODEUS [oro dies] was first conceived by a Singaporean comic artist who is always on the lookout for ways to bring together his work with other products. A chance conversation with a friend with the industry know-how started this exploration into how his dream of marrying science fiction, manga and comics with watch design can be realised.

Starting from a simple drawing inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey and related science fiction objects, the first collection – OD-1 (one) – was thus born. Inspired by some of the most iconic watch case designs, you might get a sense of déjà vu when you first cast eyes on the broad case shape of the OD-1; yet, there is not a straightforward comparison that can be made. The overall dimension of the OD-1, with slanted lugs and a 13mm-thick case, is designed to fit most wrists comfortably.

The outstanding design feature of the watch is without a doubt the cross bar on its dial. This cross bar intertwines with the open space of a metal plate that it sits on and the rotating discs for time reading. For those in the know, it is undeniable that this feature of OD-1’s design is inspired by Kubrick’s Space Station V.

Instead of adopting the conventional way of telling time, rotating discs representing the hour and minute are used. A tiny cross-bar in the centre of the dial turns when the watch is powered up. Time can be read from the red line on the dial, with the number on top representing the hour and the number at the bottom representing the minute, which is displayed with 5-minute interval markers.

Powering the watch is an automatic movement calibre 82S0 by Miyota with a specially designed custom gold-plated rotor that is visible from the exhibition caseback. The choice of movement is clearcut given that it is well-tested and well-priced, which is important as it keeps the retail price affordable.

In addition to the beautifully-made rotor which captures your attention when you view the watch from the back, you will find your eyes drawn to an engraved quote.

"Man is never perfect, nor contented.” ~ Jules Verne

Jules Verne is considered to be the father of science fiction. These wise words serve as a reminder to the brand’s founders and to the future owners of ORODEUS watches that we should all strive to improve ourselves and the people around us.

The sci-fi theme continues in the watch’s presentation box, which bears a striking illustration by our resident comic artist. The drawing showcases the artist’s alter ego, Captain OD, and his loyal companion, Deus, the intelligent pet robodog as they embark on their space adventures. These two characters will accompany the brand throughout its odyssey deep into infinity and beyond.

Available in two variants for the first launch, OD1-1 and OD1-2, the watches have a recommended retail price of US$715 and come with a 2-year limited warranty. OD-1 is available for sale directly from www.orodeus.com with free shipping included.

About ORODEUS™

No history. No story. Just a new adventure. ORODEUS is an infinite blank space; a perfect playground for our imaginations; for charting our own destiny with like-minded, fun-loving collaborators. It is a platform to fulfill a long-time dream; to offer an alternative; and to simply explore the infinity and beyond. Born in the 70s and 80s, the collaborators hail from the sci-fi generation; hence, the heavily space age-inspired design for our watches.

The word ORODEUS [oro dies] is a mashed-up theoporic word derived from the Latin words, horologium (time) and deus (God). Time is infinite; space is limitless; and Gods are immortal.
